enviroSPRINT was a 3-day online event for postgraduate researchers (PGRs) from the NERC Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs) ARIES, EnvEast, C-CLEAR, Cambridge ESS, ENVISION, IAPETUS2, INSPIRE and SPITFIRE.

During enviroSPRINT, interdisciplinary Teams of PGRs from universities across the UK developed innovative solutions to some of the pressing needs of policy makers, industry and third sector organisations in the environmental sciences.

What did we do?

Over the course of three days, Teams rapidly investigated one of 5 Challenge areas, identified a key problem and innovated potential solutions.

Each Team included a PGR Facilitator and a PGR Communicator who had received additional training and guidance to support their Teams. The Communicators created a Miro 'exhibition space' to share their Teams' progress and ideas, generating excitement and building connections with other participants.

Experts from a number of nationally important organisations contributed their time and knowledge to provide background information, insights and advice to the Teams.

On the final afternoon, Teams demonstrated a prototype of their solution to a panel of expert judges who assessed the novelty and feasibility of the concept, along with the quality of the presentation, and selected a winner.

Alongside this, each Team produced a 90-second summary of their idea to share with a wider audience. These can be viewed on the Team pages which are linked from each Challenge page.

The teams addressed 5 Challenge areas:

Sustainability of wetlands for the economy, environment and society

Led by the ARIES and EnvEast DTPs and the Anglian Centre for Water Studies with Anglian Water and Norfolk Rivers Trust

Nature-based solutions to climate change

Led by the C-CLEAR and Cambridge ESS DTPs and the Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI)

How can we mitigate climate change through soil carbon management?

Led by the ENVISION DTP and the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH)

How might we make deep-sea mining sustainable?

Led by the IAPETUS2 DTP with industry partners
